Abstract
1,192,365. Electric motors. WOOD-JEFFREYS Ltd. 22 May, 1967 [31 May, 1966], No. 24059/66. Heading H2A. [Also in Division F1] A cooling fan unit for an I.C. engine comprises a printed circuit permanent magnet electric motor 10 on whose output shaft 12 is directly mounted a fan 11 creating an axial air stream external to the motor case 13, 14, the motor being mounted on a bracket 21 having one or more bosses 22, 23 through each of which extends a mounting rod 25 fastenable to a fixture e.g. brackets 28, 29 of a motor vehicle framework whereby the motor may be adjusted longitudinally of the rods and secured by means e.g. screws 26. As shown, eight ferrite magnets 15 provide the stator field, and the printed circuit forms the armature winding on a rotary disc 19 fixed to the shaft and whose Cu laminate, on a glass fibre reinforced resin material, is directly engaged by two carbon brushes not shown. The motor is switched on by a relay 33 controlled by a normally open thermal switch 32 disposed in the radiator header tank and closes when the engine cooling system reaches a preselected temperature. In a modification, both mounting rods may be on the same side of the unit. The case pressings 13, 14 are waterproof, and one carries the shaft bearing 16.
