Abstract

1,192,331. Jointing. HAYDEN-NILOS Ltd. 24 Dec., 1968 [5 Feb., 19681, No. 5633/68. Heading B3U. A tool for securing two or more elements together by a bolt F and collar E comprises means 5 for drawing collet jaws 26 away from a swaging nose 34 and a spring 23 for urging the collet 26 towards an annular projection 33, which opens the collet 26 when it is moved back towards the nose 34 after the collar E has been swaged into the recesses of the bolt stem. Plate elements B, C are secured to a belt D by placing the swaging nose 34 of the tool on the collar E and rotating a driving member 11 by a handle 19. A tubular insert 5 in screw-threaded engagement with the member 11 is thereby raised causing its lower tapered inner surface 24 to urge the collet jaws 26 into engagement with the bolt stem F and to draw them away from the nose 34. The belt D is compressed between the plates B, C and the collar material E is forced into the screwthreads or circumferential grooves of the stem F by the swaging nose 34 to secure the collar E to the stem F. After swaging, the tubular insert 5 is returned to its initial position by the handle 19, the spring 23 pressing the jaws 26 to the annular projection 33 to release them from the stem F. After withdrawing the tool, the surplus stem length is cropped by applying the bored end 39 of the handle 19. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown), the tubular insert 5 is formed with a piston (40) which is moved upwards by an hydraulic medium.
