Heading H4L. In a television system the sound signals are transmitted as duration modulated pulses 33, Fig. 4, injected at the "black level" 30 during the time interval corresponding to the back porches 31 of the line blanking pulses 32, both the leading and trailing edge of the pulses 33 being modulated. At the transmitter, Fig. 1, the line sync. signal is selected at 3 from the video signal from source 8 and supplied to control a gate 12 feeding the video signal to a circuit 11 where it is combined with width modulated pulses from adder 15 supplied by leading edge and trailing edge modulators 13, 14 respectively receiving an input from an audio source 9 and from sync. selector 3. The sync. signal is regenerated at 7 and combined with the composite signal at 6, the resulting signal being transmitted. The audio signal is separated by conventional electronic switching means controlled by the sync. signal at the receiver.
