[Also in Divisions B1 and F1] In a syringe, Fig. 2, which withdraws predetermined columns of a liquid sample and a further liquid reagent separately but simultaneously, and mixes and discharges them together through the same needle 45, suction is applied at 41, thus piston 40 is drawn up to adjustable stop 32 drawing reagent through 47 into chamber 37 and sample through needle 45 into chamber 36. When pressure is applied through 41, piston 40 is depressed thus discharging reagent through line 46 into chamber 36 where it mixes and passes with the sample out through needle 45. The maximum volume of chamber 37, i.e. the volume of reagent drawn into the syringe, is made large enough to ensure that all of the sample is washed out of chamber 36 by the reagent.
