Abstract
1,191,932. Filtering medium. VEREINIGTE PHOSPHATDUNGERWERKE, VEB. 15 March, 1967, No. 12206/67. Heading B1D. [Also in Division Dl] The pore diameter of woven or felted cotton, nylon or PVC, nettlecloth or kalmuck is reduced to below 10<SP>-6</SP> cms. by precipitating silicic acid on to the fabric fibres. The fabric may be impregnated with silica sol, which is converted to silicic acid by treating with HCl, after drying. Or silicon tetrachloride is applied to the fabric, hydrolysed with water to form silica sol and silicic acid formed therefrom by applying. HCl. These processes may be repeated several times to achieve the desired pore size reduction. The fabric is then used to filter precipitated salts from chemically treated sea water, in sea rescues.
