Apparatus for making and filling bags, which may be of plastics, with generally flat articles, comprises a device for opening the bags prior to inserting the articles. A bag (not shown) is brought from the manufacturing device to a supporting table 25 by cords (29), Fig. 3 (not shown), which lie in grooves in the surface 26 of the table when the latter is raised by an electromagnet 27. The raising of the table also causes the opening flap of the bag to be clamped between the table 25 and the near edge 3 of a clamping plate. A slide 8 is now loaded with an article to be packaged, and a contact is thereby operated to start a motor 53 which drives the slide 8, guided by a sleeve 4 on a bar, in the direction indicated by arrow 20. This motion causes a roller 18 to descend a cam surface 19, lowering the rear end 12 of a coverplate 10 on to the article on the slide 8. The movement also frees an arm 42, allowing a spring 39 to open spreader levers 34, (35) which in turn open the mouth of the bag. A blower device (not shown) may also be provided for this purpose. The slide 8 has, at its leading edge 11, two recesses (62), Fig. 3 (not shown) which accommodate rollers (47), 48 when the slide reaches its extreme position within the bag, and the bag and contents are then held between these rollers. A switch 64 is now actuated by a part 63 on the slide, causing the motor 53 to be reversed, whereupon the slide 8 returns to its initial position. At the same time, a chain wheel 57 causes the bag to be withdrawn by the roller (47) in the direction of the arrow 65, the table 25 having been lowered. The switch 66, operated by part 63, stops the motor 53. A contact 67 actuates the mechanism (not shown) for making the plastics bags, and causes a fresh empty bag to be conveyed to the table 25.
