Abstract

1,191,710. Urea aldehydes. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 28 Sept., 1967 [29 Sept., 1966], No. 44185/67. Heading C2C. Urea aldehydes of the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are alkyl radicals or the radical: wherein R 3 and R 4 are alkyl radicals and X is oxygen or sulphur, are obtained by reacting a urea of the formula wherein R 5 and R 6 are hydrogen or alkyl radicals, with formaldehyde and with a CH-acid aldehyde of the formula at a temperature of 0-120‹ C. in the presence of an acid which does not oxidize under the reaction conditions, stoichiometric amounts of formaldehyde and CH-acid aldehyde being used for every hydrogen atom which is attached to the nitrogen atoms of the urea. The compounds in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> denote C 1-18 alkyl radicals and R 3 and R 4 denote C 1-4 alkyl radicals are claimed per se. The formaldehyde may be used in the form of an aqueous solution as paraformaldehyde, trioxane or as a formaldehyde acetal and suitable non-oxidizing acids are hydrogen chloride, sulphuric acid, oxalic acid, p-toluene sulphonic acid, benzene sulphonic acid or ion exchangers containing sulphonic acids. The reaction is preferably effected in the presence of inert solvents or diluents, e.g. water or ethers, or alkanols may be employed, in which case acetals corresponding to the end products are obtained which may be hydrolysed to give the corresponding aldehydes. The products are stated to possess textile finishing properties.
