Abstract

1,191,460. Printing processes. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 26 June, 1967 [29 June, 1966], No. 29308/67. Heading B6C. [Also in Division G2] A thermographic method of producing a visible image comprises heating an original containing a volatile material to transfer it imagewise to a receptor sheet and immediately or subsequently converting the transferred material into a visible copy by a process involving a colour change in a suitable polyhydroxyanthraquinone (PHAQ) compound. The volatile material is generally coated uniformly on the original. The volatile material may be a PHAQ compound which is evaporated on to a receptor sheet containing either an alkanolamine to effect a colour change due to pH or reaction with the alkanolamine or a metal salt to form a coloured chelate. Alternatively, the receptor sheet with the PHAQ image may subsequently be treated with above reactants to produce the colour change or the volatile material may be an alkali which is transferred to a receptor sheet containing a PHAQ compound to produce a differently coloured image as above. Specified PHAQ compounds are alizarin and alizarin Red S which change from red to violet with alkali, quinizarin and 1,4,5,8 tetrahydroxyanthraquinone which react with alkanolamines to give blue dyes, flavopurpurin and anthrapurpurin. Aluminium, tin, chromium, iron and calcium salts may be used to form metal chelates with alizarin.
