Abstract

1,190,948. Two-stroke engines; cooling charge; regulating; fuel injection pumps. J.D. WISHART. Aug.17, 1967 [Aug.22, 1966 (2); May 5, 1967 (3)], No.38034/67. Headings F1A and F1B. Compressed air e.g. from a two-stage pump 31, 32, is passed through a heat-exchanger 37, mixed with fuel in a space 17 and admitted to a combustion cylinder 11 near top dead centre, the cylinder 11 being connected to an expansion cylinder 42 through piston controlled ports 90. The pump pistons are actuated from the wrist pin 20 and the expansion piston 43 is actuated from the pump linkage 35, 35a, through lever 36 and connecting rod 44 so as to lag behind the combustion piston 13 by about 100 degrees crank angle. An interstage cooler 33 is arranged in the cooling jacket of the pump cylinder 31. The heat exchanger 37 is similar to that of Specification 1,120,248. The ports 90, Fig.6a, are lined with stainless steel inserts and the inter-connecting passage 96 is heat insulated by a metal shield 95, Fig. 6c (not shown) backed by a layer of porcelain. The opening period of the intake valve 41 and of the fuel pump inlet valve 76 are adjusted corjointly by axially movable cams 72, 71, Fig.4, which are moved by a manual or governor control arm 78. The ignition timing is also adjusted from the slidable slave 70a. The stroke of the fuel injection pump is controlled in accordance with the compressor delivery pressure by a pressure responsive capsule 82, Fig. 5, which adjusts a lever 84 across a cam follower 83. The capsule loading spring 85 is adjusted by a lever 87 and a fine adjustment screw 88. The fuel injector 8, Fig. 9 (not shown) is provided with an electric coil (100) to heat the fuel at starting.
