Abstract
1,190,734. Flexible, heat-insulating tubes; pipe couplings. HALL-THERMOTANK INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 21 April, 1967 [22 April, 1966], No. 17660/66. Headings F2G and F2P. An axially extendible and compressible thermally insulated coupling, e.g. for connecting thermally insulated cargo containers to a central source of refrigerated air, comprises preferably corrugated inner and outer flexible tubes 1, 2 each formed of air-impermeable e.g. fabric reinforced, strip wound, thermoplastic material 3, helically coiled reinforcing members 4, 5 made e.g. of plastics coated iron wire or strips, or ribbons, of metal or plastics, a filling between the tubes of thermally insulating fibrous material 6, e.g. mineral wool or fibrous glass, to give a thermal conductivity of not more than 0.5 B.Th. U/hour/square foot/‹ F. temperature and preferably not more than 0À3 B. Th. U/hour/square foot/‹ F., a connector at one end of the ducting to surround an opening through which refrigerated air flows, and an apertured coupling means 7 at the other end of the ducting having a resilient end seal 10 surrounding the aperture in the coupling means which seal can abut against a sealing surface around a further opening and permit communication of refrigerated air between the openings. As shown, a metal coupling 7 is connected to an end of the tubes 1, 2 by clamping strips 8, 9 to totally enclose the fibrous material 6. Heating wires may be wrapped round the inner and/or the outer tubes, or, the reinforcing coils 4, 5 may be employed for this purpose if they are made of suitable material. Heating elements 12, housed in a groove 11, or 11<SP>1</SP>, are also provided on at least one of the couplings 7, the elements being connected in series with the longitudinally extending heating wires. The couplings 7 may be provided with connectors, e.g. twist couplings, wing nuts &c.
