An electrolytic colormeter cell consists of a cathode of a metal, e. g. silver, transportable through the electrolyte and an anode of a valve metal, e.g. tantalum, niobium, aluminium or titanium, pre-plated with the cathode metal. Preferably the cathode is constituted by the interior of the cell casing. In use, when the anode has been completely deplated the valve metal oxidizes and the anode-cathode resistance increases substantially. This resistance change may be employed to operate an indicator or a switch.
