Abstract

1,189,649. Dense magnesium oxide. THERMAL SYNDICATE Ltd. 31 Aug., 1967 [1 June, 1966], No. 24400/66. Heading C1A. A block of magnesium oxide of density not less than 3À50 gm./c.c. is made by intimately mixing magnesium oxide powder of surface area determined by nitrogen adsorption greater than 10 m<SP>2</SP>/g. (prepared by calcining a decomposable magnesium compound below 850‹ C.) with 0À1 to 10% by weight of finely divided lithium salt, e.g. lithium fluoride, sintering by heating in air at 700‹ C. or above, heating to 800‹ to 1400‹ C. while compressing in a die under 500 to 3000 p.s.i. pressure in a vacuum less than 0À5 torr, and firing at 1000‹ C. or above in a moving atmosphere. Calcination to produce magnesium oxide may take place in a rotary drum. The intimate mixture may be formed by mixing slurries of magnesium oxide and lithium fluoride in an inert organic liquid, e.g. isopropanol, grinding in a colloid mill and evaporating most of the solvent. Sintering may take place in a recrystallized alumina tube, and graphite dies are preferably used in the compression. Firing to remove excess lithium salt may take place in an atmosphere of air, argon, or oxygen. Specified decomposable magnesium compounds are the sulphate, hydroxide, oxalate and basic carbonate. Magnesium oxide and lithium salt may be prepared as suspensions in an inert organic liquid, e.g. isopropanol in order to minimize pick-up of CO 2 and water vapour.
