Diesel fuel contains an oil-soluble calcium salt Ca[OCO(CH 2 ) n NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>] 2 , wherein K<SP>1</SP> is acyl, K<SP>2</SP> is H or alkyl, and n is 1-4, preferably in an amount of 0À05-2À0 gm. (calculated as Ca metal) per litre of fuel, to reduce smoke formation. Calcium medialanate (the calcium salt of oleoylsarcosine) is particularly suitable.
