Abstract
1,189,327. Mercury cathode electrolytic cell. BADISCHE ANILIN & SODA-FABRIK A. G. Sept. 4, 1967 [Sept. 5, 1966], No.40309/67. Heading C7B. In an electrolytic cell for use in the electrolysis of aqueous solutions of alkali metal chlorides using a horizontal mercury cathode 6 supplied with current via the cell bottom, the cell bottom comprises in sequence layers of aluminium 3, steel 2 (e.g. 0À1 to 0À5 mm thick) and of chemically resistant electrically insulating material 1 (e.g. hard rubber) and mushroom-shaped members 4 of metal resistant to corrosion by mercury (e. g. of steel) which convey the current between the aluminium layer 3 and the mercury 6. The mushroom-shaped members 4 are uniformly distributed in parallel rows and arranged with adjacent rows offset by an amount of from half to one diameter of the shaft of the mushroom-shaped members. The average number n of mushroom-shaped members per square meter, the diameter d of the shaft in meters and the rated cathode current density i in kA per square meter satisfy the equations The steel layer may be bonded to the aluminium by an adhesive. The underside of the mushroom head may be provided with concentric grooves or with projections.
