Abstract

1,189,301. Guiding cables. POST OFFICE. 19 May, 1967 [27 May, 1966], No. 23959/66. Heading B8B. [Also in Division D1] The inherent twist in a coil of wire 12 is maintained as it is payed out under tension, by passing the wire through an apparatus comprising a grooved wheel 7 rotatable by the passage of wire 12 therearound, and a mechanism 1, 13 driven by the wheel 7 for twisting the wire about its longitudinal axis as it moves through the apparatus. The grooved wheel 7 is fixedly mounted on a rotatably mounted hollow spindle 3, to the remote end of which is secured a pulley 2. The wheel 7 driven by the wire 12 therefore rotates pulley 2 which through belts 4, 5 and a variable speed gear 6 rotates the twisting mechanism. The latter comprises a pulley 1 freely rotatably mounted on the spindle 3, and a framework 13 fixed to the pulley 1 and mounting idler pulleys 8, 9 over which the wire 12 passes between leaving the wheel 7 and passing through the spindle 3 to the outlet. A brake 11 applied to the pulley 1 or to either of the pulleys 2, 7 or the shaft 3, controls the tension of the wire which is being payed out under load. For a particular ratio of coils/length of wire, the pulley 1 is secured for rotation with the wheel 7 and the gearing 6 is by-passed. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the wire engaging grooved wheel is rotatably mounted in a frame which is itself rotatably mounted about an axis perpendicular to that of the wheel. The ends of a shaft on which the wheel is secured, have pinions which engage a fixed crownwheel, whereupon rotation of the wheel causes the frame to rotate to twist the wire passing through the apparatus.
