Abstract

1,188,874. Tobacco smoke filters. CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED. 27 Feb., 1968 [1 March, 1967; 29 Dec., 1967], No. 9340/68. Heading A2C. [Also in Division, D2] A tobacco-smoke filter includes, as adsorbent, silica gel having incorporated therein at least 0.2% by weight of active charcoal and from 8 to 12% by weight of water. The charcoal is incorporated in the silica gel by the method disclosed in Specification 1,188,873. Preferably the silica gel contains 10% of active charcoal and 10% of water. From 1 to 25% of additives such as iron or zinc oxides, alumina, or an ion exchange resin may be included with the charcoal in the silica gel. The charcoal-containing silica gel may: 1) be used in filter cartridges for cigarette holders etc.; 2) form the centre component of a three component filter; or 3) be added to a carrier for making into a single component filter, e.g. by mixing with cellulose fibres, by coating cigarette filter paper with it, or by incorporating in paper pulp during the manufacture of cigarette filter paper. The preferred particle sizes of the silica gel for the above uses are respectively in the ranges of 1) 0.5-3 mm., 2) 0.2-0.5 mm., and 3) 10-30 microns.
