Abstract

1,188,701. Grinding. STRACHAN & HENSHAW Ltd. 26 March, 1968 [6 April, 1967], No. 15941/67. Heading B3D. A method of machining a surface whilst submerged in a liquid consists in partly enclosing the machining tool in a casing, and supplying gas under pressure to the casing to expel the liquid therefrom. In apparatus for carrying out the method, a thin grinding wheel 10, which may be used for cutting stainless steel rods under water, is disposed on the shaft of an air motor and partly enclosed by a casing 32 which has lips 34 in close proximity to the wheel and has an inlet 40 for the exhaust air from the motor to expel liquid from the casing. The motor is mounted on an arm movable about a pivot 22 on a supporting carriage 28 by rotation of a lead screw 44 from a bevel gear drive. The carriage is secured to a nut engaging a lead screw 56 whereby it can be adjusted along slides 58. In other embodiments, the tool may be a cutting wheel, wire brush, buff, belt or orbital sander.
