Abstract

1,188,509. Locally hardening springs. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. July 18, 1967 [July 21, 1966; June 5, 1967], No.32956/67. Heading C7N. [Also in Division F2] . A leaf spring, as used in vehicle suspensions, has (see Division F2) surface hardened zones at its ends, where in use it slidingly engages support members. The surface hardening is achieved by induction heating using a coil 41 of the form shown in Fig. 2 and, by restriction of the heating time and/ or by quenching the other surface with a liquid jet 50, the hardened zone is restricted to a depth of 0À05 to 0À25 inches. Spring steel of 42 to 47 Rockwell C hardness may be given a surface hardness of 57 to 65 Rockwell C in this way. Fig. 5 (not shown) depicts the variation of hardness with depth in a typical treated spring.
