Abstract

1,188,344. Pressure sensitive adhesive tape. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 21 April, 1967 [6 June, 1966], No. 18400/67. Heading B2E. A tacky and pressure-sensitive adhesive tape wound upon itself in roll form comprises a backing of bi-axially oriented polypropylene film coated on one side with a layer of tacky and pressure-sensitive adhesive, each of the longitudinal edges of the film being formed with a series of closely spaced micro-notches which are not visible to the naked eye but which are visible upon viewing the edges through a microscope at an enlargement of 15 to 20:1. The tape possesses a longitudinal elongation at break of no more than 25%. The term "polypropylene" includes homopolymers and co-polymers of propylene. The micronotches in the edges of the tape are formed by slitting the tape with flattened cutting edges which also possess micro-notched edges. In the example a bi-axially oriented polypropylene film is activated on one of its surfaces to improve its anchorage characteristics, and coated by reverse roll coating on its activated surface with an aqueous dispersion of a co-polymer of 2-ethylhexylacrylate and vinyl acetate.
