Abstract

1,188,064. Electrolytic reduction of nitro compounds. MILES LABORATORIES Inc. 16 Feb., 1968 [6 April, 1967], No. 7807/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C7] In a process for the electrolytic reduction of a reducible aromatic nitro compound comprising passing an electric current through a cell having an anode, a cathode, anolyte and catholyte baths separated by a semi-permeable membrane, and the compound to be reduced being present in the catholyte, hydrogen sulphide is passed through the catholyte bath. The reduction may be carried out either as a batch or as a continuous process. The anode may be of lead, platinum or carbon; and the cathode may be of silver, lead, titanium, molybdenum, " Hastelloy C " (Registered Trade Mark), which contains nickel, molybdenum, chromium, iron &c. or " Ni-O-Nel " (Registered Trade Mark). The electrodes may be in bar, rod or mesh form. Substances which may be reduced include nitrobenzene, i.e. to p-amino phenol, o-chloronitrobenzene, m - nitrotoluene, 2 - chloro - 2- nitrotoluene, o - ethylnitrobenzene, m - nitrodiphenyl amine, 5 - nitroisoquinoline, 2 - nitroparacymene and 2,5-dichloronitrobenzene. An organic acid may form the electrolyte and a surfactant, e.g. a quaternary tetra-alkyl ammonium chloride may be present in the bath. The electrolyte compartments may be provided with a reflux condenser, thermometer and mechanical stirring means. The membrane used may be of anionic or cationic exchange resin of porous ceramic material which may be impregnated with resin. Examples of membranes which may be used appear in the Specification. The cell may be of batch-type or of continuous flow type in which pumps may be provided to force electrolyte past planar electrode surfaces. The nitrobenzene, for instance, may be added to the cell only after the temperature thereof and electric current have been established at the working condition of the cell.
