In a liquid-piston pump for slurries or the like, the slurry S is isolated from the working pump 1, 2 by a liquid L, e.g. oil, which has a lower specific gravity than the slurry and does not mix readily with, dissolve into or react with the slurry. The liquid L and the slurry S form a horizontal boundary plane P within a tank B, and the tank is provided with means D for minimizing disturbances of the boundary plane to avoid intermixing of the liquid and slurry. As shown, the means D may comprise a number of vertical plates extending across the tank in directions normal to one another to form a vertically-extending spaces. Alternatively, the means D may comprise a vertical member of spiral transverse cross-section, or a flat horizontal disc floating at the level of the boundary plane and having a diameter less than the inside diameter of the tank. The floating disc may have peripheral projections slidingly engaging vertical guide grooves in the tank wall.
