Abstract

[Also in Division C3] Filaments, bristles, films, and tapes are formed from a polymeric composition comprising a major proportion of nylon-6, CaCl 2 , and another thermoplastic polymer. There may be 0À3-1À5 wt. per cent (phr) CaCl 2 , and 20 wt. per cent (phr) of the other thermoplastic polymer, which may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, or polyester, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate. The CaCl 2 may be added to the mixed polymers, and the mixture melted, and extruded, e.g. to form filaments, bristles, tapes, or films. The filaments formed by extrusion through a 15-hole spinneret of 0À5 mm. hole diameter, are stretched to 3 x original length in a bath at 98‹ C. to give a tow of 900 denier (monofilament denier = 60). The filaments are then treated several times in a 9 g/l. bath of a polyoxyethylene oleyl ether non-ionic surfactant at 70‹ C. A film extruded from a dye of lip length 300 mm. and lip width 0À7 mm. is 30 Ám. thick, and is slit and stretched 3À5 x original length using hot rolls at 145‹ C. to give 700 denier tapes. The tapes and filaments have improved dye affinity and when dyed have improved colour fastness to washing.
