Abstract

1,187,677. Safety harness. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. 19 Sept., 1968 [22 Sept., 1967], No. 43151/67. Heading A3V. A seat harness, particularly for aviators, including straps which are adjustable and may be releasably fastened together to hold an occupant in a seat 10, has left and right shoulder straps 11, 12, which in use, come from behind the left and right shoulders respectively of the occupant round buckles resting on the occupant's upper chest and back around the back of the occupant's neck to anchorages 22 adjacent the right and left shoulders respectively. Straps 13, 14, 16 and extensions 11a, 12a of straps 11, 12 are fastened together by a quick-release box 15 attached to the crutch strap 16. Roller buckles 21 and extension straps 11a, 12a are mounted on a padded horse collar 26 worn round the aviator's neck with guide straps 27 attached to the collar 26. One end of each shoulder strap 11, 12 is attached to an inertia reel 20 and the other to a rotatable eye-bolt 23 by a fork and lug member 24. In the event of an aviator-containing module ejection escape the shoulder members 11, 12 or forcibly wound in by a rocket means the firing of which is initiated when the module is ejected. There are provisions (not shown) to tighten the shoulder members beyond the degree allowed by the inertia reels 20 by locking the reels and then manually adjusting the extension straps 11a, 12a. The inertia reels may be positioned on the seat frame and rotatably mounted so that their axes are always normal to the line of pull of the straps 11, 12.
