Abstract
1,187,164. Non-alcoholic beverages. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. March 20, 1969 [March 26, 1968], No.14556/68. Heading C6E. An ethanolic beverage e.g. sherry or cider, is distilled under reduced pressure to remove ethanol therefrom, the flavour constituents are extracted from the ethanolic distillate with a low boiling point solvent in which ethanol is substantially insoluble (isopentane, ethyl chloride or liquid carbon dioxide under pressure), the solvent extract is separated from the distillate, and the flavour constituents are recovered from the solvent extract by removal of the solvent and replaced in the residue from the original distillation. The whole is brought back to its original volume with water. The ethanol-free beverage may be supplemented by the addition of further volatile flavour constituents. Thus, according to the examples, excess of n-propanol, iso-butanol and n-butanol was added to ethanol-free sherry residue whereas the amount of amyl and hexyl alcohols returned was reduced. With cider small amounts of npropanol and glycerol were additionally included with the flavour constituents returned, and the ethanol content of the flavour-replenished residue was brought up to the legal limit of 2% proof spirit. The product was carbonated.
