Abstract

[Also in Division C7] A coating is electrodeposited on a metallic or other conductive object, e.g. steel sheet forming the anode in an aqueous bath of pH 6-11 containing a solution or dispersion of (a) a neutralized alkyd resin having an acid number (in the unneutralized state) 10-300 and containing an α-substituted alkanoic acid having at least 5 C atoms per molecule bound through ester groups to the resin, and (b) a formaldehyde condensate. The alkyd resin is preferably prepared in two stages by first reacting a polyol (e.g. glycerol, pentaerythritol or a polyalkylene glycol), a polycarboxylic acid and/or anhydride (e.g. phthalic anhydride with or without an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid) and a glycidyl ester of the α-substituted alkanoic acid, then further reacting the first-stage reaction product with a polycarboxylic acid anhydride, preferably using an amine esterification catalyst, e.g. a trialkylamine. The neutralized resin may be diluted with an alcoholic solvent. The α-substituted alkanoic acid used may have been obtained by the Koch method of reacting CO and water with α-olefins having at least 7 C atoms per molecule under the influence of H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , complex compounds of H 3 PO 4 and BF 3 , or Ni carbonyl as a catalyst. The formaldehyde condensate may be a melamine resin or hexamethoxymethyl melamine. Many solvents and other reactants for the alkyd resin are specified. The bath may contain inorganic and organic pigments, e.g. TiO 2 , fillers, metal powders, particulate synthetic resins, e.g. polyethylene. Prior to neutralization, the non-neutralized alkyd resin and formaldehyde condensate may be subjected to precondensation at between 70‹ and 100‹ C. The coated object may be heated at between 80‹ and 220‹ C.
