Abstract

1,187,116. Condensation polymer/pigment compositions. JAPAN GAS-CHEMICAL CO. Inc. 28 April, 1967 [28 April, 1966; 2 May, 1966], No. 19675/67. Headings C3P and C3R. Pigment compositions comprising 10 to 70 wt. per cent of a pigment of 0À01 to 10 microns uniformly dispersed in a solid matrix resin of M.W. 300 to 3000 and softening point 40‹ to 250‹ C. are obtained by mixing a precondensate of M.W. 150 to 700 of an aliphatic aldehyde with an aromatic hydrocarbon and/or a psubstituted phenol with said pigment and heating the mixture for 0À5 to 10 hours at 100‹ to 250‹ C. in the presence of an acid catalyst. The composition may be modified by incorporating 10 to 100 by weight of the precondensate of a phenol, dibasic acid, phenolcarboxylic acid, drying oil, epoxy resin, rosin, petroleum resin, cumarone-indene resin or terpene resin prior to heating. Numerous inorganic and organic pigments, acid catalysts, resin-forming aldehydes, hydrocarbons and phenols and modifiers are specified. An inert solvent, e.g. toluene or xylene may be present while the pigment is mixed with the precondensate. The compositions are soluble in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohol, ether, ester and ketone solvents and are compatible with drying oils, alkoxymethyl melamine and alkyd, styrene, PVC and ABS resins. Their solutions may be used as printing inks or they may be incorporated in resin paints and mouldings and rubber. In examples, the pigments of the invention are incorporated in polyethylene; polypropylene; polystyrene; PVC; ABS resin; melamine, acrylic, alkyd/ melamine and drying oil alkyd paints and polyamide as well as with various solvents to form printing inks. In Example 20 it is dispersed in isopropanol or a butyl proprietary glycol ether, neutralized with aqueous triethanolamine or ammonia and used to colour an oil/water type printing binder. In Example 3 the composition is ground to 25 microns and dispersed in toluene as a printing ink.
