Abstract

[Also in Divisions F4H and F4S] A supply pipe 14 delivering liquid to a device 16 for cooling the liquid, incorporates means 15 for damping out fluctuations in the flow of liquid along the pipe, the cooling device 16 (not shown in detail) being one comprising a container having means therein for distributing liquid to be cooled over a cooling surface located within the container. In the cooling system shown for milk delivered to the cooler 16 from pulsator milking machines 11, the said damping means 15 consists of a reservoir arranged in a line 14 by which milk is delivered to the cooler 16. The reservoir has a removable lid and a renewable filter element for the milk. From the cooler 16 the milk passes via a flexible tube 20 either into churns 21 or into a bulk storage tank. The churns 21 (or the bulk storage tank) are connected via a line 22 with the vacuum line 12 in which the vacuum is maintained by a pump 9. Milk from the cows enters the line 14 by way of pipes 13 attached to the milking machines 11 and the flow pulsations produced by these machines are said to be damped out by the reservoir 15 before the milk reaches the cooler 16. The degree of vacuum is controlled by a pressure regulator 41 which allows air to bleed via vent 43 and pipe 42 into the vacuum line. Means for cleaning the equipment by flushing in known manner is described. The cooling element in the cooler 16 may comprise the evaporator chamber of a refrigerator 19, in which case the pressure in the evaporator chamber may be controlled (e.g. by a valve responsive to the pressure on the suction side of the compressor) so as to prevent freezing of the liquid on the wall of the chamber. The element itself may consist of one or more helical or circularly bent tubes, or a hollow plate consisting of two channelled members disposed face to face. These may be bent to annular form. When the cooler discharges into a bulk storage tank, the liquid may be recirculated continually between the cooler and the tank. Alternatively the bulk storage tank may itself comprise the cooler.
