Abstract

1,214,589. Refrigerating. TERMOMECCANICA ITALIANA S.p.A. 12 Aug., 1969 [13 Aug., 1968], No. 40252/69. Heading F4H. In a refrigerating installation including a compressor 1, condenser 5, reducing valve 7 and evaporator 3, lubricating oil to be cooled from compressor casing 11 is withdrawn by pump 19 and passed through a heat exchanger 17 and a cold oil reservoir 26 on its way back to bearings 9, 10 of drive shaft 8. Liquid refrigerant from evaporator 3 and line 23 is used to cool the oil in heat exchanger 17; the refrigerant vapour produced passing into the top of casing 11 from where it is vented through line 15 into Venturi tube section 16 of the suction line 2 of the compressor. About 5% by weight of the oil is carried over with the refrigerant through line 15 and this produces a foam in evaporator 3 which helps to keep tubes 13 immersed in the refrigerant. Some oil is recycled with the refrigerant through line 23 and exchanger 17 to the casing 11. Due to the provision of Venturi-tube section 16, the pressure P1 in the casing 11 is less than the pressure P 0 in the evaporator, this pressure difference causing the refrigerant flow through line 23 and heat exchanger 17 and aiding the cold oil flow from reservoir 26 to bearings 9, 10. In a modification the cold oil reservoir may be dispensed with.
