Abstract
1,186,968. Ropes and apparatus for making ropes. BERGEN SLYNGEEFABRIKK A.S. 4 March, 1968, No. 10366/68. Heading D1T. [Also in Division A1] A floatable cord is made by feeding a core 20 of continuous filament threads into a braided sleeve 14 of filamentary material, and arranging particles of expandable plastic material 18 between the core and the sheath. The particles may be of heat-expandable material, such as polystyrene, so that on expanding said particles the cord becomes floatable. The material 18 may be continuous or, as illustrated in Fig. 3, it may be in spaced apart portions by using means such as a cam 34 to oscillate a nose 37 on a spring arm 38, the movement of the nose 37 serving to open and close a discharge opening 33 for the material 18. The opening 33 thus dispenses spaced apart doses of the material 18 into the sleeve. By means of additional dispensers there may be disposed between said spaced apart doses of material 18 doses of expanded foam plastics particles, unexpanded plastic and/or other filler material. The filled sleeve passes through a vessel 21 of hygroscopic fluid mixed with water, thence to a drawing arrangement 24 and finally to a container 14a having a perforated wall and base. The collected cord is then passed to a heated fluid bath (not shown) having a temperature below the fusion temperature of the expandible material 18 and maintained there until the material 18 has expanded to the desired granular size and without the particles thereby being fused together to any substantial degree. Fig. 4 shows how the cord expands when the material 18 is inserted into the braided sleeve in spaced apart doses. The core threads 20 are preferably fuzzy so that they can initially be charged with static electricity to cause the particles of the material 18 to attach themselves to one another and to the core 20.
