Abstract
1,186,893. Continuous casting. O. NOE, and W. MANTHEY. 21 April, 1967 [30 April, 1966], No. 18504/67. Heading B3F. A starter bar head has a part 2 which is pivoted on a pin 6 to form jaws with the main part and which has concave surfaces for coaction with a rotatable locking pin 10 so that it can be locked by one surface, as shown, in the open position to release an expendable keying piece 3 which remains in the cast strand 7 when the starter bar is removed. The pin 10 coacts with the other concave surface when the jaws are locked on to a bead or flange of the keying piece 3. A longitudinal wedge may replace the rotatable pin 10. The keying piece 3 consists of a piece of a rolled section such as a cableway suspension rail as shown, or a railway rail, Fig. 4 (not shown). Several pieces may be used with each head. The jaws may be opened automatically by rams. A layer of asbestos (8) and scrap for cooling prevents adhesion of the cast metal on the jaws. The head may be releasably coupled to an articulated starter bar by a similar jaw arrangement so that different sized heads may be selected for use.
