Abstract
1,186,852. Producing zinc. L. STEWART. May 10, 1967 [Feb.15, 1966], No.6562/66. Heading C7D. Zinc is recovered from materials consisting largely of impure Zn and ZnO by melting them and allowing the molten material to percolate through an externally heated carbonaceous mass, thus distilling off the metallic Zn and reducing the oxidic material with subsequent distillation of the Zn so formed. The carbonaceous mass (e.g. anthracite or high temperature vertical retort gas coke) is preferably hotter at the bottom than at the top and may be heated by means of gas burners. Further carbonaceous material may be added separately or with the oxidic charge to obtain a relatively constant surface level in the charge. The surface however is preferably sequentially reciprocated across the column to prevent coagulation, arching or sticking of the carbonaceous mass. The Zn vapour may be extracted by a jet type suction pump, preferably powered by the molten Zn, the vapour withdrawn at the top of the column is produced by the direct distillation and that at the bottom is produced by the reduction of the ZnO followed by distillation and the Zn produced is preferably maintained in a molten state in the condensers.
