Abstract
1,186,786. Aerials. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. 9 May, 1967 [12 May, 1966], No. 21605/67. Heading H4A. An aerial comprises four substantially equally sized vertically stacked aerial units each containing aerial elements arranged in a plurality of levels and energized with substantially equal amplitudes. The elements in all levels in the two middle units are fed in phase and lead or lag reference phase by 25 to 40 degrees. The elements in the two levels in the top and bottom units which are respectively directly above and below the two middle units are fed in phase and lag or lead reference phase by 10 to 20 degrees (their angular difference from reference phase is of opposite sign from that of the elements of the two middle units). The elements in the outer levels of the top and bottom units are fed at reference phase. It is stated that with this arrangement filling in of the area (in a vertical plane) below the main beam of radiation from the aerial is obtained. The effect may be enhanced by introducing phase differences between the levels of the middle units to give a progressively increasing phase lag from the top to the bottom of the two units. A suitable phase difference between levels is 140 degrees divided by the total number of levels in the aerial. Furthermore, similar phase differences may be introduced between all levels of the aerial. An arrangement is also described for feeding eight aerial elements disposed in two levels and constituting one aerial unit. By using 90 degree phase shifters and reversing some elements, a progressive 90 degree-phase difference between vertical pairs of elements is obtained. The vertical pairs or columns of elements may be arranged in square formation around a mast, for a rotating field aerial.
