Abstract
1,186,606. Roasting coffee. HILLS BROS. COFFEE Inc. 18 May, 1967 [27 June, 1966], No. 23156/67. Heading A2Q. A continuous process for roasting coffee beans comprises preheating green coffee beans with steam under pressure and under substantially non oxidising conditions in vessel 12, discharging the partially roasted and moistened beans into vessel 14 at atmospheric pressure to puff and expand the beans, roasting and fluidizing the expanded beans in vessel 16 and cooling and preferably fluidizing the roasted beans in vessel 18. The cooled roasted beans may be conveyed by suction through conduit 138 to further processing units. The beans are introduced into and discharged from pressure vessel 12 by partitioned rotary valves 32 and 50 respectively which serve as pressure locks to maintain the pressure in vessel 12. A helical screw 52 conveys the beans through vessel 12. In the roasting and cooling vessels 16 and 18 the beans are fluidized by the roasting and cooling gases respectively and the beds are supported by vibrated gas impervious plate means 66 and 112 respectively. The beds are formed by the gases being directed downwards on to the plate means. The gases may be recirculated.
