Abstract

A -resistor body is coated for protection and insulation with powdered material by dipping into a fluidized bed of the material. A cylindrical resistor block, which may have non-linear characteristics, to be coated is produced by firing a powder, extruded paste or a cast slip mass. The flat end faces are then metallized, leaving a peripheral annular zone free from metal to provide contacts, prior to dipping. If the coating is of a synthetic resin, for example, an epoxy resin, the resistor block is heated prior to dipping sufficiently to fuse the powder on to the block in the fluidized bed. Additional heating to a higher temperature after removal from the fluidized bed ensures a fully cured, coherent coating. If the coating is a refractory metal oxide such as alumina or a mixture of such oxides, adherence of the powder in the fluidized bed to the resistor block is achieved by prior coating of the block with an adhesive slurry containing ethanol, water, ethyl silicate, hydrochloric acid and zirconia. Subsequent heat treatment in a suitable atmosphere then hardens the coating. The coating process may be repeated to obtain adequate layer thickness. The metallized end portions do not receive any coating. Specification 764,693 is referred to.
