Abstract

1,186,361. Acrylonitrile copolymer films. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 March, 1967 [24 March, 1966], No. 13072/66. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] A film is made from a copolymer comprising 50% to 90% molar of units of acrylonitrile, 50% to 10% molar of units of at least one aromatic olefin, the sum of these two percentages being 100%, and optionally units of other monomers copolymerizable therewith in molar amounts less than the molar amount of aromatic olefin, the units of aromatic olefin being randomly distributed in the polymer molecules. Films are prepared in the examples from an acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer by (a) compression moulding the copolymer, (b) solvent casting the copolymer, (c) casting a latex of the copolymer on a drum and then drying the film formed and heating it, or (d) extruding the copolymer. The films produced are uniaxially or biaxially oriented. The uniaxially oriented films may be fibrillated.
