Abstract

1,186,350. Ultrasonic whistles. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 12 Sept., 1967 [15 June, 1966], No. 26764/66. Heading G5J. In an ultrasonic transducer, gas from a reservoir (not shown) flows in a bore 12 in a metal block 11, and is directed by a nozzle 16 to a resonant cavity 15, and a step 18 in a recess 17 in a slot 14 acts as a flow spoiler to stabilize the intensity and frequency of the emitted sound. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) a round section bar (21a) against a step (21) in a recess (20) in the slot (14) acts as the flow spoiler. In further embodiments (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) the recess in the slot is omitted, and the flow spoiler is a peg (22, Fig. 3) or a transverse plate (23, Fig. 4). The transducer may be used as an overheating warning device in the core of a nuclear reactor, a fusible plug which melts at a predetermined temperature separating the bore and the gas source, or as a leak detector in a reactor fuel element.
