Abstract

1,186,332. Energy absorbing shackle for cargo ties. VAN ZELM ASSOCIATES Inc. 4 Jan., 1968, No. 618/68. Heading F2E. A metal bender energy-absorbing means, particularly for tying down cargo, e.g. in aircraft or vehicles, comprises a steel tape bent at its mid-point longitudinally, formed into two coils 23, 24 and arranged as shown in Fig. 3, within a cylindrical casing. One end of the energy absorber is coupled via a web strap 11 to an attachment on the cargo, as shown in Fig. 1, while the mid-point of the tape protrudes from the casing and is coupled via a known type tension adjusting means 13 (e.g. pawl and ratchet or turnbuckle) and a web strap 11<SP>1</SP>, to a floor ring (not shown). The steel tape 21 is bent around tube members 32a to 32g being thereby stressed beyond its elastic limit. Under dynamic tensile loading the tape is withdrawn from the casing, as shown dotted in Fig. 3, thus successively and progressively bending increments of the tape beyond the elastic limit and absorbing a proportion of the kinetic energy of the dynamic load.
