Abstract

1,186,211. Extrusion laminating. CEE-BEE MFG. CO. Inc. 4 April, 1967, No. 15496/67. Heading B5N. A laminate is made by extruding thermoplastic material B, applying thereon a reinforcing sheet A, pressing while the extruded section is still hot, and thereafter quickly cooling to room temperature. Reinforcing sheet A may be a laminate of polyethyleneterephthalate sheet 10 and extruded layer 15. Sheet 10 may be corrugated or serrated and its face may be varnished or covered with a layer of vinyl chloride resin; it is preferably metallized at 13 by vacuum deposition, e.g. of Ag, Au, Sn, Al, Cu, Co or Ni. Layer 15 serves as an adhesive and may be omitted. Pressure is applied by rollers 24, 26 and cooling is by air or water, e.g. in bath D. The extruded materials are preferably of polyethylene or polypropylene, containing 10-35% butadiene rubber, but may also be of plasticized polyvinyl chloride, acrylo-butadiene resin, cellulose acetate, polystyrene or polyurethane. Extrusion may be at 200-350‹ C. As shown, base B is beaded around sheet A; alternatively sheet 10 may extend over the edges of base B. In another embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) sheet A is folded around an extruded cylindrically-shaped base (32).
