1,186,146. Cross-linking polyolefins. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 29 Jan., 1969 [20 Feb., 1968], No. 8258/68. Heading C3P. A process for the preparation of a cross-linked polyolefin, e.g. polyethylene, comprises the steps of (i) incorporating into a crystalline polyolefin a thermally activatable free-radical generator which is dissociable below the crystalline melting point of the polyolefin, by immersing the crystalline polyolefin in a solution of a freeradical generator in a solvent therefor, e.g. xylene, which solvent has a swelling or at least partial solvation effect on the crystalline polyolefin, (ii) heat treating the composition so obtained to cause cross-linking, and (iii) repeating steps (i) and (ii) at least once, and in the process the incorporation of the free-radical generator and the heat treatment of the composition are effected below the crystalline melting point of the polyolefin and the incorporation of the free-radical generator is also effected at a temperature at which little or no thermal decomposition of the free-radical generator occurs. Free-radical generators: benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, dicumyl peroxide, 2,5-dimethyl - 2,5 - di - (t - butyl - peroxy) - hexyne - 3 and azobis(isobutyronitrile). The solvent of the free-radical generator may be a polymerizable polyene, as exemplified by the alkyl esters of acrylic, methacrylic, maleic, fumaric and itaconic acids, diallyl esters of sebacic and phthalic acids, diacrylates and dimethylacrylates of glycols, and divinyl benzenes. Examples disclose the repeated soaking of moulded sheets of crystalline high density polyethylene in a solution of dicumyl peroxide in allyl methacrylate for 5 hours at 60‹ C. and heating the sheets for 18 hours at 120‹ C. to decompose the peroxide. Cross-linked polyolefins obtained by the process exhibited better resistance to creep at elevated temperatures and higher heat distortion temperatures, e.g. 130‹ C. or more, than the uncross-linked polyolefines. Thin section pipes, tubes, fibres and films of crystalline polyolefins or the surface layer of shaped articles of greater thickness may be treated.
