Abstract

118,598. Bennett, W. R. Aug. 16, 1917, [Convention date]. Metal hardening and tempering furnaces. - A furnace for the heat-treatment of steel comprises three superposed chambers, of which the lower two are open and the uppermost are closed to the gases from a combustion chamber at the base. As shown, the furnace is enclosed within a cylindrical metal sheet 12, and the combustion chamber 7 and the heating-chambers 3, 4, 5 are formed by slabs 9, 11, 16, 22, and a cover 34 spaced apart by fire-brick rings 10, 15, 21, 33. The slabs 11. 16 are shaped to provide annular openings 20 round their edges, so that the products of combustion have free access to the chambers 3, 4. The uppermost chamber 5 has a metal floor 32 spaced from the slab 22, and to the chamber 31 so formed air is admitted to maintain a constant temperature in the chamber 5, under control of a ring damper 40 operated by thermostatic devices 43 mounted on the cover 34. The doors giving access to the chambers are divided in an horizontal plane, and either half can be opened independently of the other. The goods are first heated in the chamber 4, then transferred to the chamber 3, and finally, after hardening, tempered in the chamber 5.
