Abstract

1, 185,931. Photo--electro-phoretic imaging. XEROX CORP. April 10, 1967 [April 12, 1966], No. 16226/67. Heading G2H. A method of photo-electro-phoretic imaging comprises subjecting a layer of a suspension of electrically photo-sensitive particles in an insulating carrier liquid to an applied electric field between two electrodes while exposing the suspension to an image through one of the electrodes, whereby an image is formed on one of the electrodes, and transferring the particle image to a transfer member by contacting the particle image with the transfer member during simultaneous exposure of the particle image and the application of an electric field across the transfer member and the electrodes carrying the particle image. As shown in Fig. 1, the layer 14 of suspension is on a transparent electrode 13. During exposure of the layer to a transparency 30 a cylindrical blocking electrode 26 is rolled across the layer to collect exposed particles as described in Specification 1, 124, 625. The particle image remaining on the electrode 13 is then transferred to a transfer surface 38, e.g., of paper while a conductive core 36 is connected to a P.D. 40. In other embodiments, the transfer surface (45, Fig. 2 not shown) is a continuous web (44) of conductive material and the imaging electrode (16, Fig. 4, not shown) is an endless band formed of inner layers (56) and outer layers (58). Transfer of the image may be effected solely by the application of an electric field, but it is stated that transfer is enhanced by uniform or imagewise exposure of the particle image to electromagnetic radiation during transfer. The radiation may have a single wavelength or a selected band of wavelengths, e.g., by interposing a filter (66) in the illumination path. In the case of multi-colour imaging, suspension 14 includes two or more photo-sensitive particles responsive to different wavelengths. Particular carrier liquids and photo-sensitive particles are stated or may be as described in Specifications 1,158,301 and 1, 124, 625.
