Abstract
1,185,910. Optical filters; holograms. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP. Ltd. Dec.23, 1968 [Dec.21, 1967], No.58192/67. Heading G2J. An optical filter having the transmission characteristics of a pattern embossed on the surface of an object (e.g. a fingerprint) is recorded by pressing the object 2 against one side 3 of a partially reflective surface of a rigid transparent medium e.g. glass 1, illuminating the surface by a source of coherent light a, b, collecting the light waves a<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>1</SP>, reflected from the opposite side of the surface 3 against which the object is pressed by a lens 5 which converges the waves on to a photographic plate 6 located in the focal plane of lens 5. The troughs and ridges of the pattern pressed against the surface produce a characteristic variation in the refractive index over the surface and the resulting phase and amplitude variation of waves a<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>1</SP> are recorded on plate 6. In this embodiment the plate 6 records the Fourier transform of the fingerprint XX<SP>1</SP>. To avoid interference between waves reflected from the front surface 4 of medium 1 are those carrying the desired information either the medium must have a suitable thickness or the object surface 3 may be suitably angled. Alternatively a right angle prism may be used with three internal reflections produced. In a further embodiment the source of coherent light may be split to give a reference beam which follows an approximately equivalent path length before being superimposed on the rays a<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>1</SP> on plate 6 to form a hologram. The filter is for use in an optically matched filter character recognition system.
