Abstract
1508783 Determining refractive indices KODAK Ltd 23 May 1975 [25 April 1974] 18145/74 Heading G2J [Also in Division G1] A device for determining refractive indices comprises two parallel sided cells, shown in plan, one on top of the other in Fig. 2, whose front faces are parallel and facing the same direction, a parallel line grating 2 of such coarseness that diffraction effects are insignificant, and a source of light oblique to the front face of the cells. As shown the cells displace a light beam to different extents and therefore the emerging array of light beams from the top cell is displaced with respect to that of the lower cell. The emerging light beams are caused to pass through a second coarse grating 3 (or are reflected back through the original grating) whose lines are parallel with grating 2, and the moirÚ patterns are observed (e.g. directly or on a screen), their relative displacement being related to the refractive index difference. Several arrangements are possible. Photo-electric observation of the fringes may be employed.
