Abstract
1,185,841. Cutting by fusion. STACK BURNERS Inc. 29 March, 1967, No. 14371/67. Heading B3V. A stack of sheets S1-S6, Fig. 15, particularly of metal, are severed by a fusion cutting tool N, and a stream G of cooling fluid is directed into the cut surface. The cooling fluid which is preferably water forms barrier films R1-R5 between the sheets to restrict dissipation of the energy of the cutting flame F which is produced by a burner N. The sheets may range from <SP>1</SP>/ 16 to “ inch in thickness and are supported on beam members 2, 4, Fig. 1. C clamps 18-28 are secured around the edges of the stack and adjacent the cut, and the sheets are pressed together by feet 62, 62<SP>1</SP> actuated by compressed air or hydraulic cylinders 58, 58<SP>1</SP> suspended from carriages 46, 48 running along a gantry 42. Serrated locking surfaces (47), Fig. 7 (not shown), on the carriages are arranged to grip the gantry when pressure is applied to the feet 62, 62<SP>1</SP>. Cooling water is supplied from a reservoir 80 to an annular receptacle 84 surrounding the burner nozzle N and rotatable thereon. A pipe 90, Fig. 15, delivers the cooling stream G to a position directly adjacent to but separated from the cutting flame F. The supply of coolant may be intermittent. Before cutting is started, a hole (H) is drilled through the stack by a drill (D), Fig. 11 (not shown), held to the stack by a magnetic base. During cutting the positions of the feet 62, 62<SP>1</SP> are changed so as to be near the cut surface. The burner is mounted on a cutting machine M and is preferably controlled by a tracer moving over a drawing. After cutting, the severed part (96<SP>1</SP>) is lifted out by a magnet (97), Fig. 4 (not shown), suspended from a hoist 98. The cutting tool is preferably an oxygen/acetylene burner but alternatively may be a plasma jet. Weights may be used instead of clamps to press the sheets together.
