Abstract

1,185,543. Straightening. SIEMAG SIEGENER MASCHINENBAU G.m.b.H. 5 June, 1967 [4 June, 1966; 2 Sept., 1966], No. 25799/67. Heading B3E. A roller straightening apparatus has the straightening roller mounted on shafts journalled in separate frames, a first group of which support the lower rollers and are slidable along ways arranged in a machine bed parallel to the direction of travel of a workpiece, and a second group of which support the upper rollers and are slidable in ways arranged on the first group of frames, on that side of the first group which is remote from the machine bed. The apparatus comprises a bed 1 on which the frames 3, which support the lower rolls are mounted. The middle frame 22 is fixed and the outer frames are slidable along the bed. The slidable frames are retained by angle-section strips 2. A shaft 21 is journalled in the middle frame and has threaded portions 25 and 26 at each end which engage nuts secured to the sliding frames. The pitch of the thread on the outer parts 26 is twice that of the inner parts 25 so that the distances between the frames remains equal when they are moved. The lower straightener rolls 6 are mounted on shafts 5 which are adjusted vertically in the frames by screw jacks 43, 44 driven by a common shaft 41 and a motor 40. The upper straightener rolls 10 are mounted on shafts 9 which are journalled in the upper frames 8, which span the space between adjacent lower frames. The upper frames 8 are slidable on the lower units and are retained against upward movement by inter-locking formations comprising lateral extensions on the upper frames and channel section strips 15, 16, 17. The upper frames are guided to prevent canting by two parallel rods 29, 30 and the lower frames are guided by a key 20 engaging in corresponding keyways in the bed and the slidable lower frames. The upper frames are moved along the bed by rotation of the spindles 29 and 30 which have threaded portions 31 to 34 engaged in nuts secured to the frames. The pitch of the outer screw-threaded portions is twice the pitch of the inner portions. Both the upper and lower traversing spindles are driven by gearing from a motor 24. In a modification the lower frames only are driven by a threaded spindle and the upper frames have pinions 69 and 70 which mesh with rack teeth 66, 67 formed on the lower frames. The pinions are connected by two meshing intermediate wheels 71 and 72, so that the pinions 69 and 70 rotate equal amounts in opposite directions and maintain each upper frame centrally over the two lower frames which it spans. The pinions 69 and 70 may be replaced by smooth-faced wheels rolling on smooth surfaces.
