Abstract

[Also in Division F4] The supply pipe 34 to a water heater includes a variable head valve 23 connected across a stop valve 35 in the pipe 34 by inlet and outlet pipes 27, 33. The water enters at 27 a chamber 35 and flows to outlet 33 through perforations controlled by a tapered plug 29 connected to a loaded membrane 31, The maximum delivery pressure to the heater is determined by an open stand pipe 36, Fig. 4, downstream of the valve 23, the valve 29 being loaded to open at a pressure in outlet 33 slightly below that set by pipe 36. In operation valve 35 is closed and under static conditions the pressure in pipe 33 holds plug 29 closed. When water is drawn off from the heater, the drop in pressure in pipe 33 causes valve 29 to open.
