A process for the production of aldehydes and esters comprises contacting an olefinically unsaturated compound, at elevated temperature and pressure, with carbon monoxide, hydrogen and a catalyst comprising a compound of a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table and a hydrocarbyl of tin, silicon, boron or aluminium. The process is preferably carried out at a temperature in the range 200-250‹ C. and at elevated pressures up to 3000 atmospheres. The catalyst may comprise a preformed complex of the type R x (D-M(CO) n where M is a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table, D is Sn, Si, B or Al, R is a radical or group, at least one R being a hydrocarbyl group, and x and n are integers. Examples prepare normal- and iso-butyraldehyde and esters of normal- and iso-butyric acids in which the alcohol moiety may be branched and has 8, 12 or 16 carbon. atoms. Examples of suitable complex compounds of the type R x (D-M(CO) n are triphenyltincobalttetracarbonyl (prepared by dissolving dicobalt octacarbonyl and triphenyltin hydride in pet. ether and heating the solution) and tri - n - butyltincobalttetracarbonyl (prepared by reacting sodium tetracarbonyl cobaltate with tri-n-butyltin chloride in an ethereal medium).
