Abstract

1,174,299. Diesters of oxo-synthesis products. BRITISH HYDROCARBON CHEMICALS Ltd. 19 Feb., 1968 [13 April, 1967], No. 17045/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Products useful as vinyl-polymer plasticizers are obtained by (1) treating a feedstock consisting wholly or mainly of 3,4-dimethylhexenes with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in an oxo-synthesis reaction; (2) reducing the aldehydes so obtained to alcohols; and (3) reacting the alcohols with a plasticizer acid, as later defined. The preparation of a suitable initial feedstock is described in Specification 1,164,474. The initial oxo-synthesis reaction may be effected under conventional conditions in the presence of a cobalt catalyst, e.g. dicobalt octacarbonyl, cobalt carbonyl hydride or a hydrocarbon-soluble organic acid salt of cobalt. The reduction of the aldehydes to alcohols may be effected in known manner without initial fractionation. The esterification of the alcohols with a plasticizer acid may be effected in known manner also, a " plasticizer acid " being defined as any dicarboxylic acid the diesters of which with C 8 or C 9 alcohols have been proposed as plasticizers for vinyl polymers. Specified plasticizer acids are phthalic, isophthalic, sebacic, adipic and azelaic acids. An example is given.
