Abstract

1,184,872. Holders for piezo-electric elements. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 22 May, 1968, No. 24484/68. Heading H1E. A ceramic thickness-shear resonator 10 is housed within a receptacle 14 made of rubber, electrical connectors 15, 16 being pressed against the electrodes of the resonator by the resilience of the receptacle. The receptacle may be made of butyl, silicone or thiokol rubber having a hardness of 10 to 60 on the Shore A scale. It is provided with a slot having a depth greater than the corresponding dimension of the resonator and a width slightly less than the width of the resonator whereby the latter is slightly constrained laterally. This constraint reduces unwanted resonances. An insulating element 17 is inserted between the conductors 15, 16 to prevent mutual contact. The resonator may comprise a polarized disc of PZT with part of the lead replaced by magnesium and niobium and an additive of 1% of MnO 2 . The ratio of diameter to thickness of the disc should lie between 4 and 20 for best suppression of spurious resonances. It is polarized at an angle of between 0 and 60 degrees to the radial plane. The separation between the resonant and antiresonant frequencies decreases as this angle increases.
