Abstract
1,266,143. Ultrasonic transducers. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 26 March, 1969 [3 April, 1968], No. 16045/68. Heading H4J. In an ultrasonic transducer assembly comprising a crystal 1 and a backing member 5, the rear face of the member 5 is conductive and a spring 13 provides electrical connection thereto and urges the front electrode surface 2 of the crystals into contact with a conductive case 6. A crystal 1 of piezoelectric or ferroelectric material (e.g. quartz or lead zirconate titanate) has electrodes 2, 3, the electrode 3 being electrically connected by conductive cement 4 to a backing member 5. A metal case 6 has an inturned lip 7 engaging electrode 2. Within the case 6 is an insulating layer 8. A metal stud 9 is threaded into member 5 and the case 6 is closed by a metal plate 10 mounting a waterproof connector socket 11. A conductive spring 13 between a stud 12 of the socket 11 and the stud 9 forms a conductive path between the connector 11 and crystal 1. Member 5 is retained by a spacer ring 14 and a rubber 0-ring 15. Waterproof seals 16, 17 are provided. The crystal 1 preferably comprises synthetic resin loaded with piezoelectric powder, moulded to shape and polarized.
